Guidelines In Insulating Newly Constructed Log Cabin Kits
Log cabin kits are sold in many styles and designs. Do you want a wooden home with a sunroof? You got it. Do you want a cabin with overly large windows? Just say so. Do you need a structure with a wooden deck? Just browse through the manufacturer's site.
All designs have one thing in common, that is, they are constructed out of logs, or solid wood. Since the logs are stacked up to form the structure, it is usual that there will be openings between the logs and boards. Unfortunately, these spaces enable chilly air and drafts to seep inside, severely lessening the heating efficiency in your home. Lacking sufficient insulation, the interior of your residence will become uncomfortably freezing during autumn or winter. Even force, you will have to pay an enormous heating bill, considering that your heating system needs to work doubly hard.
To make your log cabin warm and comfortable and to cut a huge bit of heating bills, you have to place some sort thermal insulation system in your cabin.
1. Seal all gaps with high-quality silicone caulking. Don't forget to caulk the often-overlooked joints where the wall and the roof join together. Log home caulking is a silicon-based sealant just like window caulking and can be applied with a caulk gun. Make sure you seal both the interior and exterior of the cabin.
2. After the caulk has dried, step inside and run your hand along the seams of the logs and sides of the wall. If you feel cool air blowing, apply more caulk to that area. You can find smaller cold air drafts and leaks more accurately if you have access to a thermal imaging camera.
3. For the attic, install a few layers of R-value fibreglass insulation. Focus particularly between the joists of the attic. You may have to pry l out a few boards to make sure that the joists are filled in completely.
4. If your log cabin has a vaulted or open ceiling, place insulating sheeting before adding any roofing material.
